Am I a good manager?

Over the course of my 23+ years of experience across diverse organizations—large and small—and working with managers from various backgrounds, one key observation has stood out to me. I recollect a senior leader onse saying "To be an effective manager, one must first be a good human being' But who exactly is a "good human being"? According to the Bhagavad Gita, being a good human being involves living with self-discipline, fulfilling one’s duty (Dharma) without attachment to the outcomes, practicing compassion, non-violence, and truthfulness, and cultivating self-awareness. It calls for letting go of ego, focusing on one’s higher self, and acting with kindness and integrity toward all living beings. Empathy, humanity, kindness, and integrity form the four essential pillars of personal growth, with humanity serving as the cornerstone of effective leadership.
